HAPPY NEW YEAR

We turn the page on a pretty good year in California athletics - 3rd place and a tourney appearance in hoops, a co-championship and thumping bowl win, and we'll even count the national championship in water polo. It is bittersweet to watch the Rose Bowl and know that our Bears could be there save for a poor performance in the desert. That's 2006 thinking, though - this is a New Year, and we wish our readers - and our alma mater - all the best. And by all the best, we mean this (or better) next January 1:

Yep, I don't care what the pessimists say and all that "we won't have a defense next year" crap. We can do it!! Go Bears!!! And how cool would it be for us to play Michigan at some point? It will be the yellow mustard jerseys vs the neon mustard pants.

We definitely could have defeated Michigan. Thank you, Michigan, for showing us how not to play $C.

I happen to think our defense won't be as good next year as it was this year.

But it won't really matter when we're putting up 40 points per game. Screw "defense wins championships" - we might have lost the best or second best Cal running back of all time, but we are going to put up points on fools next year.

I really don't see us having that poor of a defense this coming year. This past year, as touted as our defense seemed to be with Bishop, SQT, and Hughes, we got picked apart by more than a few teams at midfield. For the most part, we had great D against the big play and good run D, but what separated us from other teams is that we were clutch. With Felder back at LB and hopefully at least one member of the Mixon family in the secondary I don't see us being out-and-out worse than this year.

It's of course way too early to tell, but we could be as good or even a little better. Depends on improvement from a number of guys, though, starting with Felder. We'll have a way-too-early depth chart up this week.

You neglected to mention the Crew and Rugby championships, as well as both Men's and Women's Soccer reaching the NCAA tourney, as well as our Women's Volleyball ...

Given the attention shown to Basketball and Football, it's very easy to forget that overall Cal is one of the premier athletic schools.

Go Bears!

A relatively young defense isn't as bad as many expected if they are well coached and execute well as a team. Just look at USC.

The BSU game was absolutely awesome! Trick plays, turnovers, a big win, and a marriage proposal. What more can you get? Their fans must be going WILD right now.
